Betta fish tank basics without the bowl myth
A beginner-friendly guide to heated tanks, gentle flow, feeding and water quality.
This advice is educational and does not replace a qualified veterinarian. Seek professional advice for illness, injury, specialist diets or sudden behaviour changes.
Start with a real aquarium
Bettas need a cycled, heated and filtered aquarium with calm water movement. A bowl is not a modern welfare-first setup.
Feed tiny measured portions
Use a quality betta food and feed only small amounts. Remove uneaten food quickly so the water stays stable.
Choose tank mates carefully
Some bettas are best alone. Any community plan needs research, spare equipment and a backup plan if stress or aggression appears.
